According to ROdatazone, about 318. The site hasn't been updated in a while, but assuming that they haven't changed the success rates on average it'll take 318 attempts to get to +10 with Weaponry Research 10.
What would Weaponry Research have to do with anything? Black/whitesmiths can't refine armor. You're stuck with refining at the NPC.
