I've been told, on various occasions, that putting more than 2 Hydras in one weapon will reduce the effect of the third and fourth one.

Exactly how does this work, and why? And if so, what is the best alternative to a Triple Bloody?
That is untrue.
double hydra double skel worker
Or triple-single. Difference is negligible. Basically it's about what cards you get.
i found a thread at rms long time ago discussing about the effectiveness of card between hydra and skel worker, as i can remember : if your str>90, then skel worker are more effective than hydra, however it was tested on rms test server.

and...?

2nd of the same % card decreases the effect too, it's no longer 20% of the 100% damage of the weapon's raw dmg as the bonus

Lol what? have you even taken math, Splits?

(i'm not sure if they work on base dmg, or on the dmg being dealt, so 2 examples.)

Assuming base dmg is 100

1st hydra adds 20 dmg
2nd adds 20 dmg
third adds 20 dmg
total-> 160 dmg

or

1st adds 20 dmg (120)
2nd adds 24 dmg (144)
3rd adds 28.8 dmg
for a total off 172.8 dmg

-----

If double hydra + skell worker

Skell worker (base attack is now 105 because of its bonus) adds 15.75 dmg
1st hydra adds 20 dmg
2nd hydra adds 20 dmg
total->160.75

Skell worker changes base dmg to 105 and adds an extra 15.75 dmg (120.75)
1st hydra adds 24.15 dmg (144.9)
2nd hydra adds 28.98 dmg
total-> 173.88 dmg

Point being, that skel worker does infact give more dmg, the diff is more noticeable at higher dmgs than 100. Stacking hydras don't lower the general bonus, no idea where you got that from -_-

ps. post was made a bit too long since im not sure if they affect base dmg only, which would be nice to know ;D
Base atk from weap+refine atk+dex atk+str atk+several other atk bonuses (including weapon masteries) are all affected by cards.

Also, you got a mistake right now in your post there.

The hydras take the new base atk, 105.

What split means is that if you have 2 hydra cards and 100 atk, the first hydra card adds 20 % dmg [100->120] but the second only 16.67 % [120->140]. The third one adds 14.29 % [140->160]. The fourth one adds 12.5 % [160->180]. That's what they mean with the effect being "reduced" since it only works on base atk, not the effective one. All in all it's a 80 % damage increase though.

Skel Worker and 2 Hydras with 100 atk look like that. Skel Worker boosts to 105 atk. Skel Worker +15 % [105->120.75]. Two Hydras add 40 % [120.75->169.05].
3 Hydras are "just" +60 % [100->160].

I hope this clears stuff up a bit.
well i find it that it works that way. that the next % comes from the new value (dmg + the dmg added by the %card) but it'll make it better which isn't what the calc is telling me so yea, i find it confusing. well zaratus pretty much cleared things up
So, basically, the same type of % cards all add up and the total amount is used on the base value, while different types of cards would then compound on top of each other.

But even then, the difference in damage of a 2 hydras and a skeleton worker and 3 hydras is very small, and the medium size modifier will be reduced vs peco-riding enemies, yes?

Thanks for the info by the way.
