Happy Lunar New Year! It's been a while since heRO has celebrated this holiday. We have a variety of old and new events for the Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day! With a mix of straightforward item turn-ins, revisiting nostalgic quests and new minigames, we hope you'll enjoy at least one of these events.

Lunar New Year

Rune-Midgart has sent a diplomatic team to the distant nations of Louyang and Gonryun. The team is south of their cities' Kafra point. Talk to the lead of the diplomatic team to start your quest. It should be quick to complete the first time receiving a new Lunar New Year celebration hat and a Dancing Dragon pet egg. You can repeat the quest infinitely for a "Past Holiday Gear Box," which contains previous seasonal headgear from other minor holidays such as Father's Day, Mother's Day, April Fools Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Thanksgiving. In addition, the box can be opened for a major holiday gearbox. You'll also be rewarded a Royal Gold Bullion, a great opportunity to grind up towards obtaining Nobility!

Monsters in Louyang and Gonryun seem to have some special items for the Lunar New Year. It may be worth visiting their respective dungeons during this holiday.

Louyang Quest Update

As a permanent addition to the server, you can talk to Madame Jing in Louyang (106,210). She has heard unsavoury rumours that someone is after Lord Bai Long's life in Louyang. Solve the mystery by completing the official quests in Louyang, and you can get either the "Yin Headdress" or "Yang Headdress", along with the "Yin Yang Ribbon". These headgear have long been unobtainable for many years, so they finally have a permanent home to be obtainable for all players. These headgear also got a minor touch-up to be aligned with modern item design standards. Please refer to the sections below to see the changes.

This is retroactive: if you have already completed the related Louyang quests on your own in the past, Madame Jing will reward you accordingly.

Valentine's Day

The Wizard Ozu has chosen a rather unusual way to celebrate Valentine's Day- to cheer for love with a bang! Collect "I Love You Fireworks" for him and enjoy the "fireworks" with him. See if you can last through his inventions! He is in the center of Prontera, and he'll help you sneak into Jawaii to play his fireworks game. These firecrackers can be obtained from the Loverings and Love Balloons throughout different cities and towns this holiday season. You'll be rewarded based on how long you can last within the game. The reward gets better and better based on your score, but it's pretty challenging, so you'll need some practice runs to have a chance to ace it. This minigameis endlessly repeatable. You can earn new Valentine's Day headgear for 2024, and future repeats + high scores can get Past Valentine's Day Gearbox for old Valentine's Day headgear.

Score rewards, and rewards are cumulative:

  • 250+: 2 Valentine's Box
  • (First Time) 500+: Costume Fluffy Heart Earmuffs
  • (Subsequent) 500+: Past Valentine Gear Box
  • 750+: Past Valentine Gear Box
  • 1000+: Lovering Egg
  • 1200+: Costume Crown of Victory

Earning a particular high score will get you the rare "Costume Crown of Victory," which is only given against the hardest of minigames in heRO's history! Furthermore, if you are on the Top 3 scoreboard at the end of the event. In that case, you will be rewarded with a new "Costume Yin Yang Orb" to honour your mastery over bullet-hell minigames and claim victory against the Test/Development team's toughest challenge!

Some old valentine's day quests are also available, though if you have done them in the past, you may not be able to repeat some of these quick quests.

  • Mesna inside Yuno Hospital/Sage building (168,190) is researching matters of the heart
  • Nyannisson in Malangdo (278, 210) is looking for some coins, trouts and Pilule and he's willing to exchange it for a costume
  • An assassin in the sograt desert (morroc field 16, 232, 200) is struggling with what gifts to give for his boyfriend
  • A Tailor in Ayothaya (189, 150) is making a special costume for the month of February!

Skill Changes

Unnerf Claymore

At long last, Claymore Trap has been changed in heRO.

Old Effect: A Claymore Trap is a visible trap that explodes when stepped on, hitting a 5x5 area around the target cell for [(75+DEX/2)*(1+INT/100)*SkillLV] damage. This skill ignores DEF and MDEF and damage modification cards for size and family, but not elemental property.

New Effect: A Claymore Trap is a visible trap that explodes when stepped on, hitting a 5x5 area around the target cell for [(75+DEX/2)*(1+INT/100)*SkillLV] damage. This skill ignores DEF and MDEF and damage modification cards for size and family, but not elemental property. Damage is increased by the number of targets hit by the same trap.

This change emulated the behaviour of the old Claymore Trap in 2008 and prior, but without the risk of client error due to the exponential splash damage in the past. GMs will reserve the right to change the skill without advanced notice if this is a balance issue. If the change is well received, we'll apply the trap damage to Blast Mine and other trap-type skills.

Other Changes

  • The One-Handed Quicken soul link skill for Knights has been buffed. The effect now stacks with all ASPD potions, so it is no longer just a zeny saver for ASPD potions with one-handed swords.
  • Sharpshoot can now target an ally in PVM and PVP situation, and it'll damage only enemies in either environment
  • You can provoke someone in the same party without using Duel now

Item Changes

Lunar New Year Headgear Changes

Yin Yang Earring has been toned down to increase Physical and Magic Damage against medium-sized enemies by 5% instead of 7%. It has 1 def, and its Gunslinger bonus effect has been removed. It no longer forms any combos.

Why make this change?
This is because Yin Yang Earring, in its previous form, greatly reduces mid-headgear equipment diversity. Since size is a lot easier to apply to different targets than race, there is no reason it should give the same 7% bonus as the racial mid-headgear. GMs have decided to standardize the mid-headgear such that racial effects give 7% bonus damage, size effects give 5% and generic effects [Robo Eye] give 2% damage.

The Yin Headdress and Yang Headdress are identical, except one is for males and the other is for females. They are also slightly different in appearance as well.

The new effect is based on [Gray Helmet] but for extended classes- they can enjoy the effect without being at Near Death, but the headgear needs to be refined.

It has the following effect:

  • 4 Def
  • SP Recovery + 10%
  • 1 slot
  • All Stats + 1 (for male/female, depending on which headdress)

Extended classes get the following for every Refine Rate of the headgear

  • ASPD + 1%
  • Cast Speed -3%
  • Max HP + 1%

The new headdress should give extended classes further help on their headgear option.

Old Red Box (Hatter) Changes

The following hats have been rotated out of Old Red Box.

The following hats are re-added to Old Red Box. Most of these items were taken out in error without a replacement source so they were unobtainable for multiple years.

An old Fairy Auction exclusive, the "Love Flower Hat" has been nerfed but also given a new appearance, now known as "Flower Summer Hat". Its chance to drop Yggdrasil Seeds has been nerfed from 5% down to a scaling drop rate based on target level, identical to Ancient Elven Ear's drop rate for random quivers. The GM team recognize that this is a severe change, but the original 5% drop rate is a grave mistake and easily accessed Yggdrasil Seed is not healthy for the server healing item balance. This should be an acceptable compromise so that now all players have a chance to farm Yggdrasil Seeds without fighting MVPs, but the drop rate should be acceptable without completely erasing the needs for other types of healing items. The "Flower Summer Hat" is now in Old Red Boxes.

Past Holiday Gear Box

This new gearbox has the following possible content. It focuses on the minor holidays, but also has potential access to convert to the major holidays.

Other Item Changes

Some old headgear has been buffed to match the Lunar New Year headgear.

  • Pterios Fins now increase Physical and Magic Damage against large-size enemies by 5%, up from 4% for Physical Damage only. The level requirement is lowered to 30, aligning with the toned-down Yin Yang Earring.
  • New Wave Sunglasses now increase Physical and Magic Damage against Small Size enemies by 5%, up from 4% for Physical Damage only. The level requirement is lowered to 30, aligning with the toned-down Yin Yang Earring.
  • Bright Fury now has 4 def, up from 1 def. It also gives 3 AGI, up from 2 AGI.
  • Astro Circle effect can stack if the day qualifies for multiple effects.
  • Freyja Crown gives 4 Def, up from 2 def, on Day of the Sun. It also gives 25 ATK, up from 20 ATK, on Day of the Moon.
  • Hockey Mask now gives 7% demihuman damage, up from 5%.

MVP Updates

Levia Lusca Update

For requiring Seafoam to summon, this MVP has been rather difficult (but also easier due to an unreported bug) and its drops are rather mediocre. Here are some changes so that melee classes have a bit easier time against the MVP, while the MVP continues to be strong against typical Sniper setups as intended throughout all these years.

Skill changes:

  • No longer casts Frost Breath, replaced by a single target Lv 5 Water Attribute Attack at 20% chance every 5 seconds
  • No longer casts Wide Freeze, replaced by Lv 5 Wide Frost at 20% chance every 15 seconds
  • Waterball cooldown length has doubled, from 10 seconds to 20 seconds
  • Fixed the bug such that Levia Lusca will properly summon Penomenas when damaged by Double Strafe, Sharpshooting and Falcon Assault

The lack of freeze means that Marc cards are no longer necessary. Players can wear any water armour against Waterball and Water Attribute Attack, giving melee classes an easier time in fighting this MVP.

Levia Lusca's Dried Squid Box MVP item has been replaced with another Damp Card Album, boosting the chance to get some cards from this MVP.

Other MVP Updates

Some high-end MVPs no longer drop items worthy of their difficulty, so here are some minor touch-ups. Some of them also missed out on the Elunium/Oridecon update last month too.

  • Valkyrie Randgris drops Valkyrja's Shield at 50%, so there should be no scenario where regular Valkyrie has "better drops" than the tougher MVP version anymore. Furthermore, Randgris no longer drops OBB as her MVP item drop, indirectly boosting the chance of getting OCA.
  • Ifrit also no longer drops OBB as its MVP item drop, indirectly boosting the chance of getting OCA.
  • Beelzebub drops Large Elunium Box (replacing Elunium) and Large Oridecon Box (new drop)
  • Tendrilrion drops Large Oridecon Box, replacing Fur
  • Hardrock Mammoth drops Large Elunium Box, replacing Elunium

This is not a direct update for Time Holder, but Time Keeper on the 2nd floor has a higher chance to spawn near the Time Holder instead of randomly throughout the floor. This indirectly makes Time Holder more difficult, but also gives players more chance to run into the miniboss to hunt for Shield Barrier Units.

Alcohol Related Monster Changes

These changes are related to farming of Alcohol, to continue with the changes last month to make brewing a little easier.

  • Kaho: 2.5% => 10%
  • Horong: 2.5% => 10%
  • Toad: 5% => 100%
  • Yellow Flower: 1.75% => 50% (in line with Blue Flower and Red Flower)
  • Christmas Hylozoist: 5% => 10%
  • Black/Red Mushroom: 2.5% => 5%
  • Tengu: 100% (as a new drop)
  • Firelock Soldier: 5% (as a new drop)

Karvodailnirol Related Monster Changes

These changes are related to farming of Karvodailnirol , to continue with the changes last month to make brewing a little easier.

  • The Paper: 100% (as a new drop)
  • Shinobi: 30% (replacing Cyfar)
  • King Kray: 100% (replacing Crystal Blue)
  • Pot Dofle: 10% (as a new drop)

Other Monster Changes

Some are related to brewing/forging, and some are economic boosts so that there's more potential location to farm items/zeny.

  • Time Keeper has Shield Barrier Unit drop rate increased from 20% to 40%, to acknowledge that a larger party is required to venture into the Blackout Clock Tower Instance compare to a party of two needed to take down Valkyries. It no longer drops Elunium or Oridecon box to scale back its drops a bit.
  • Anubis drops Anubis Helm at 0.25% as a new drop
  • Haunted Cruiser drops Cruiser Hat at 0.5% as a new drop
  • Eremes Guile drops Poison Bottle at 15%, up from 10%
  • Iara drops Poison Bottle at 1%, up from 0.75%
  • King Kray drops Chillfrost Breastplate instead of Saphien's Armor of Ocean[0]
  • Pot Dofle drops Crystal Blue at 100%, replacing Squid Ink, and also drops Saphien's Armor of Ocean[0] at 0.5% instead of Tidal Boots at 0.25%
  • Sedora drops Empty Bottle Box at 100% as a new drop and Mystic Frozen at 50%, replacing Crystal Blue at 2.5%
  • Sropho drops Ring of Wind at 1%, replacing Raw Fish, and Rough Wind at 100%, replacing Crystal Arrow Quiver at 1.25%
  • Skoll Pup drops Ring of Fire at 1%, up from 0.15%
  • Elvira drops Ring of Wind at 1.5%, up from 0.5%
  • Gullinbursti drops Ring of Earth at 0.5% as a new drop
  • Poison Toad drops Poison Bottle at 3% as a new drop, Royal Jelly at 3%, up from 2%, and Cursed Ruby at 5%, up from 2.5%

Byalan 6 should continue its trend of having very good drops, but the items weigh a lot. It should be even better than Sleeper after our server's drop rate increase if you can stay there long enough for a dungeon so far away from Healers and Warpers. Amatsu Dungeon is also lightly modified to have a good concentration of some Poison Bottle-related ingredients.
