A woman at the windmill farm claims the extermination of sunny bugs is affecting the pollination of Faeheim's plants, and it's up to you and her to find a peaceful solution to the problem.

1. At the windmill farm (fae_fild05, 99, 212), talk to Pamelly, who will complain about sunny bugs being exterminated. Explain to her you've been exterminating them, and she will get mad at you and demand help investigating the reason why they've been acting strange.
   
   
2. Pamelly will ask you to meet her near the shimmering half ring in the field south of the windmill farm (fae_fild01, 149, 180). Once you talk to her there, she'll ask you to search the west side of the field for any clues.
   
   
3. Talk to the following NPCs to investigate possible clues on the cause of the Sunny Bug's recent behavior, in any order you wish:
   
   • On the west side (fae_fild01, 32, 200), you will find strange footprints.
     
   • On a palm tree (fae_fild01, 32, 217), you will find what seems to be a weapon mark on the tree.
     
     
4. Talk to Pamelly on the far east side of the field (fae_fild01 231 221), and she'll ask you to meet her where you found the footprint and weapon marks.
   
   
5. Back on the west side (fae_fild01 35 207), Pamelly will check out the footprints and take pictures of them. She'll ask you to take the picture to the Explorer's Guild at Fortuna.
   
   
6. At the explorer's guild (fortuna 176 149), talk to the researcher on the west side of the house. He'll indicate the footprints are from merpeople.
   
   
7. Meet Pamelly at Marasmius. She will want to confront the merperson, and asks you to meet her at the sunny bug field again.
   
   
8. Back at the field (fae_fild01 249 239), Pamelly will explain that they will stake out in the bushes and catch the merperson when it shows up. If you have a Ring of the Ancient Wise King, obtainable from the Ring Of The Wise King Quest, you can bring it to use later.
   
   
9. On the west side of the field, where you found the weapon marks on the tree, you will find Pamelly hiding in the bushes. You must be near her, in the bushes, for her to respond (Less than 3 cells from her).
   
   
10. While staking out for her, sounds will be heard coming from the water (via both Pamelly's dialogue and actual sound effects). A menu will appear, and you can choose to jump out, or stay quiet.
    • Scenario A: If you jump out, you'll scare away whatever was coming out of the water.
    • Scenario B: If you stay quiet, a merman will appear.
      Note: If it doesn't spawn, it's likely because someone defeated it recently, or it spawned and wandered off. If it can't be found anywhere, IE it is dead, it should be alive again before 5 minutes.
      
      
11. You have 5 minutes to defeat it, or you'll have to stake out again. Once beaten, a merman NPC will appear where Pamelly was.
    
    
12. If you have a Ring of the Ancient Wise King, you may equip it now to understand what the merman has to say. You can still talk to him without the ring, but will not be able to understand his dialogue.
    
    
13. Talk to Pamelly again, who will explain what the merman said (if you didn't equip a ring of the wise king), and ask you to meet her at the port outside Marasmius.
    
    
14. At Marasmius field (fae_fild03 116 84), Pamelly will thank you again and reward you with the following:
    
    • If you talked to the merman with the ring of the wise king equipped, you'll obtain 15 Royal Jelly, 60 Rep Points, and 4 million base/job exp.
      
    • If you did not have the ring equipped when talking to the merman, you'll obtain 5 Royal Jelly, 40 Rep Points, and 3 million base/job exp.
      
      

You will also then be able to start the Mermaid Headphones Quest.
